"Mastering Marathon Tattoo Sessions: Expert Tips for Pain Management"
Welcome to the ultimate guide on not just enduring but conquering marathon tattoo sessions. Long sessions demand strategic planning and a commitment to endure. Today, we'll uncover the secrets and techniques that will empower you to navigate those lengthy sessions with style and grace.
Power Up with a Good Night's Rest:
The often overlooked cornerstone of pain management lies in the fundamentals – a well-rested body. This concept is very basic and very underrated, but its crucial for pain management to be well rested. Long session take a toll on your body, showing up fatigued can quickly deplete your body's natural pain-fighting arsenal of endorphins and adrenaline.
Chase the Morning Rush:
The morning is when your adrenaline level is at its peak. Adrenaline and endorphins are pain blocking hormones that can help you increase your pain tolerance level. Harness the power of your body's natural rhythms by scheduling your session in the morning. It's a game-changer.
Abandon the Spirits Before the Ink:
if you’re about to get a big tattoo session, I highly recommend not drinking alcohol at least 48 hours before your session, because alcohol greatly impacts the quality of your sleep which will result in a lower capacity to deal with the pain during the session, alcohol can be a blood thinner which can impact the session, ink retention, and your immune system which can ultimately result in poor healing. if you’re dealing with the pain, trust me, the last thing you want is an improperly healed end result.
Dress for Comfort and Flexibility:
Prioritize comfort over style, armed with extra clothes, a beanie, cozy sweats, gloves, and an extra pair of socks. You’ll have to endure some awkward positions most likely and the last thing you want to do is make it more uncomfortable by having clothes that are too tight or not suited for the occasion. The extra clothes are because your body temperature with drastically drop during the tattoo session. Different people react differently, some people get very hot while being tattooed, but as soon as we take a break they get super cold and start shivering. If you don’t have the extra gear its nearly impossible to get back to a sustainable temperature . Coming prepared with extra clothes will allow you to keep up with your body during the session and adjust environment or temperature if needed and trust me, most of the time, its needed. The extra socks are because your body regulates your temperature mostly through your extremities and some people will sweat through their feet during the session, having soggy socks becomes very uncomfortable and you will feel way better with a change of socks if this happens. These little details may sound silly or extra right now but when your in the mud deep in the trenches it really makes a huge difference.
Stay Fueled, Stay Light:
This next one is a big one, stay fueled but stay light, low blood sugar increases your pain sensitivity and that being said you want o avoid super heavily meals that will make you lethargic that are too taxing on your body. You want your energy to be focused on managing the pain, not on digesting food. Its best to have a good wholesome breakfast and come prepared to the session with dried fruits, nuts, or seeds to maintain yourself throughout the session.
Youll also want to ensure youre staying properly hydrated before during and after your session, afterall during the tattoo you will be losing a lot of fluid.Electrolytes play a crucial role in various physiological processes within the body, including nerve function and muscle contraction. While they are not directly involved in pain management, maintaining proper electrolyte balance is essential for overall health, and it can indirectly impact how the body responds to pain.
Avoid Stimulants:
Caffeine and energy drinks should be avoided, stimulants may increase, your alertness, anxiety, blood pressure, and heart rate which will make sitting for the duration of your tattoo session a challenge. This will directly lead to you being more agitated and tense while getting tattooed. The goal is a calm, focused state.
Relax and Embrace the Pain:
One of the most important tips is to keep your body relaxed, the more tense you get, the worse the pain is going to feel. Plus when you do tense up this make it more difficult for the artist which will ultimately lead to more time being needed for the session. Its a bit counterintuitive but you have to really surrender to the pain and kind of embrace it, tensing each time the needle hits your skin is going to make the session unbearable for yourself and for the person tattooing you.One of the best ways ive found to help relax during the tattoo is to hyper focus on your breathing this will really help you achieve flow state.
Celebrate the Wins:
Instead of fixating on the overall time left, celebrate small victories. Break the session into manageable milestones, making the marathon about taking the next step rather than the daunting path ahead.
Communicate with Your Artist:
Its super important to also communicate with your artist, dont be shy to ask for breaks or to lower the volume on the music, to use the bathroom, have a snack or whatever you want to ask,. If you pick the right artist, it really shouldnt be an issue for them to accomodate you in order for you to have the best experience possible. Some people like to be distract, theyll want good conversation or a move, to play some tunes or a captivating podcast but some others would rather but put in their headphones close their eyes and focus on their breathing. If you want to talk talk, if you want to be quiet thats all good too. If you chose the right person this should never be an issue.
Surving these long sessions pushing your limits and going beyond and above them will truly teach you so much about yourself, I know it sounds corny but pain really is a great teacher. These large scaled tattoo can certainly be percieved as therapy ina way, each time i get done with a big session i feel proud of myself and even look back at the hardest moments proud that i endured. Its spiritually uplifting in that way.
It's a journey of self-discovery, where pain becomes a teacher and endurance a testament. So, find your tattoo artist, jump in the chair, and let the ink etch not just a design but a story of resilience and triumph.
